Traditional date nights are not really our thing. My girlfriend and I are not the dinner and a movie type, at least not the going out for dinner and a movie type. We are the order food, find something on Netflix, and end up talking for three hours type.
And somehow that works better for us than any reservation ever has.
If you and your partner are homebodies, introverts, or just people who would rather save the gas money and stay in, this one is for you. These are the actual things we do on our date nights, not the curated Pinterest version, the real version.
Also fair warning. If you live with your partner, every single one of these might sound like just another Tuesday, but they can be transformed into a cozy stay at home date. And you are not wrong, staying at home can be just as enjoyable as going out. The difference between a date night and a regular night is not always what you do. Sometimes it is just about being present and intentional with the person you are with, even if that looks like sitting on the couch doing absolutely nothing together.
Now let me get into it.

Classic for a reason. Pick something you have both been wanting to watch, make some snacks, and actually sit together instead of both being on your phones. Sometimes the simplest version of a date night is just being fully present for something you were going to do anyway.
Not sure what to watch? Try JustWatch which lets you filter movies and shows by genre across all your streaming subscriptions so you are not endlessly scrolling through three different apps trying to agree on something.
This one became one of our favorites without us even planning it. We will look up a recipe online based on whatever ingredients we already have at home, which honestly makes it feel more like a challenge than a chore. We will make a simple dinner together and then go all out on a dessert, something a little more involved that we can do as a team. There is something about being in the kitchen together, dividing tasks, taste testing, making a mess, that feels like quality time without trying too hard.
You can find question card games or just look up lists online but the idea is simple. Take turns asking each other questions you would not normally think to ask during your next date night. What would you do if you won the lottery tomorrow? What is something you have never told anyone? What does your ideal life look like in ten years? Some of the best conversations we have had started from a random question at 10pm on a Wednesday.
A good game brings out personality in a way that regular conversation sometimes does not. Whether you are competitive or just in it for the laughs, playing a game together is genuinely fun and low effort to set up. I have a whole post on couples games worth checking out if you need recommendations for your next stay at home date. You can find that link here.
Not all video games are solo experiences. Some of our favorites for playing together are Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes which is genuinely chaotic and hilarious, and Nintendo Switch Sports which is exactly as fun and competitive as it sounds. You do not need to be a gamer to enjoy these, you just need to be willing to lose gracefully.
This one always ends up taking longer than expected. Pull up your camera roll or old albums and just scroll through old pictures together. You will laugh, you will cringe, you will find photos you forgot existed. It is a real trip down memory lane and one of those date night activities that reminds you of everything you have been through together and how far you have come.
This is one part practical and one part fun. Talk about what you want to do in the next few weeks, places you want to try, trips you want to take, things you want to experience. Or go bigger and do a vision board together. What does your life look like in a year? In five? Dreaming together is underrated as a date night activity.
Okay this one started completely by accident for us. We were actually looking for houses to buy but nothing was in our budget in the area we wanted. So we just kept looking. And then it turned into a whole thing where we would find a one million dollar home and say “oh that is super cheap, we could totally make an offer” completely deadpan.
Now we do it just for fun. We look at the budget homes and the ridiculous mansions and talk about what we would change, what we love, what we hate, whether we would actually want to live there. It sounds silly but it leads to some really good conversations about what you actually want in a home and a life together.
Nobody needs to be good at this. Someone starts singing along to something and the other person joins in and suddenly you are both doing a terrible performance in your kitchen at 9pm and it is the most fun you have had all week. Let it happen.
A fun way to make this even better is building a playlist together beforehand. You both add songs, no judgment, and suddenly you have a shared playlist that becomes yours. You can use it for your cleaning routine, throw it on for a road trip, or just let it play in the background on a regular night. It starts as a date night activity and becomes something you keep coming back to.
This is the one that might confuse people the most but hear me out. Sometimes a date night looks like both of you doing your own thing in the same space. One of you is reading, one of you is gaming, nobody is talking much, and it is still quality time. For introverts and homebodies this kind of comfortable silence is actually really meaningful. It means you are at home with each other in the truest sense of the word, creating your own special date night.
Not every date needs to last three hours or have a plan. Sometimes thirty minutes of intentional time together is enough. The point is not the activity. The point is showing up for each other even when you never left the couch, making every night feel like an at home date night.
